Are you at risk of flooding?
Planning ahead in case of a flood
Follow these eight steps if you think that you might be at risk of flooding.
1. Check if your area is at risk of flooding
You can find out if you are at risk of flooding in the following ways:
On the Environment Agency’s website
You can enter a postcode to see if the area where you live or work is at risk of flooding.
You can also get up-to-date information about current flood warnings, the river or sea levels in your area and the latest flood risk forecast for your county.
Flooding information from the Environment Agency
Checking on flood warnings in your area
If you want to get information on flood warnings for your area, read ‘Preparing for a flood’. It will tell you how to sign up for the Environment Agency’s Flood Warnings Direct service and other ways to check if there are flood warnings for your area.
Flood warning types
If flooding is forecast for your area, the Environment Agency will issue warnings to show how dangerous the situation is. The three types of warning are:
- Flood Alert
- Flood Warning
- Severe Flood Warning
When no more flooding is expected in your area, the Environment Agency will issue a ‘warnings no longer in force’ message. There is no symbol to accompany this message.
Flooding from a main river
To report flooding from a main river you should contact the Environment Agency. The Agency also provides a ‘Floodline’, which is a 24-hour advice and information service for floods and flood warnings.
Before you start to clear up after a flood
Before you start to clear up, you should:
- find out if it’s safe to return to your property
- speak to your insurance company to find out if they will organise for professional cleaners to clear up your home
If you have been evacuated because of flooding, you’ll be told it’s safe to return home by someone from either:
- the emergency services
- your insurance company
- your local council
- your water and sewage company

We pray that those affected by the Mississippi flood will be alright. Those are insanely high waters.
